A NEW PUBLICATION FROM IEMEST'S RESEARCHERS EXPLAINS ONE OF THE MECHANISMS OF ACTION OF A CHEMOTHERAPICS
A group of IEMEST researchers, lead by Dr. Claudia Campanella, Head of the Section of studies on micro- and nano-vesicles as biomarkers, has showed for the first time one the mechnisms of action of a known chemotherapics, the SAHA (suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid). This mechanism involves the nitration of the mitochondrial protein HSP60. The latter, after nitration, is released from tumor cells by exosomes. HSP60 commonly protects tumor cells from stress. Its secretion through exosomes favours tumor cell death as well as activates an antitumor immune response. This paper has been published this month on ONCOTARGET (Impact factor: 6,359): http://www.impactjournals.com/oncotarget

The IEMEST's Researchers Filippo Macaluso, Kathy Myburgh and Giosuè Lo Bosco won the second call for innovative apps in the environmental and social domains, MYGEOSS project.
Our researchers proposed the "eQUOS" app (Environment Quality for Outdoor Sports): by using an open database tracking the changing environment, eQUOS will suggest to the final user whether to perform a specific outdoor physical activity in a specific geographical area on the basis of the environment quality, i.e. climate, water, coastal areas, and atmospheric composition. The Director of the Institute in the list of the Top Italian Scientists.
Prof. Francesco Cappello, Director of our Institute, has been included in the ranks of the Top Italian Scientists elaborated by VIA-Academy. This ranking includes Italian scientists of all disciplines (science and humanities) operating in Italy and in the world. The ranking is compiled based on h-index, the index that measures the number of international publications, and their impact on the international scientific community assessed on the number of citations received. A Potential Link between lipoproteins and asthma: a IEMEST's study
A recent study carried out by two research groups coordinated by Prof. Scichilone and Prof. Rizzo, IEMEST researchers, demonstrated for the first time that, in asthmatics, the least pro-inflammatory lipoproteins (LDL-1 e LDL-2) are reduced, and the pro-inflammatory (LDL-3 and LDL-4) elevated compared to healthy controls. In addition, in asthmatics the serum concentrations of LDL-1 are positively associated with lung function, whereas the pro-inflammatory LDL-3 are inversely correlated with lung function. These findings suggest that the LDL are implicated in the pathogenesis of asthma, in that, they may act by igniting the inflammatory cascade of the airways.

A new study correlates obesity associated with insulin resistance to Alzheimer's disease
Two researchers of our Institute are co-authors of a study carried out along with researchers of the C.N.R. of Palermo, which correlates the insulin resistance, that develops in some obese individuals, with the development of Alzheimer's disease. The study has been published on "Current Alzheimer Research". In particular, insulin resistance determines, among other damages, oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction in neurons of the mice subjected to a high fat diet, and this leads to early damages that are pathognomonic for Alzheimer's disease. Treatment of metabolic disorders, then, can prevent the development of this serious neurodegenerative disease in this subpopulation of subjects. Part of this work was carried out by using the equipment of the Laboratory of Neuroanatomy funded by PON 'Research and Competitiveness' 2007-2013, measure 4.1.1.4.

A novel biomarker for the colo-rectal cancer
A group of IEMEST’s researchers, coordinated by prof. Francesco Cappello, published a paper in the journal "CANCER" (the official journal of the American Cancer Society) on a new marker for the diagnosis and the follow-up of patients with colorectal carcinoma. In this work it has been shown that a stress protein (Hsp60) bound to exosomes (vesicles secreted by tumor cells) is present in very high levels in patients who undergo surgery while its levels are reduced drastically one week after the surgery. These results make exosomal Hsp60 a putative tool for the diagnosis and the follow-up of this cancer. The work was conducted in collaboration with researchers of the University of Palermo, the National Institute of Health in Rome and the University of Maryland at Baltimore, USA.
The paper can be read on-line: here.

An authoritative "Position Paper" on physiological functions of extracellular vesicle.
Francesco Cappello, member of the Management Committee of the COST action-ME-HAD, is one of the authors of the important work on the physiological role of microvesicles and on exosomes. The focus on this topic is growing after the discovery that these vesicles can be taken from all human biological fluids (such as blood, urine, saliva, etc.) and can be used not only as diagnostic and prognostic markers but also as therapeutic tools of various human diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases and chronic inflammatory conditions. This study, published in the Journal of Extracellular Vesicles, can be read online here.

A hormone as a potential anticancer agent.
Two IEMEST’s researchers, Antonella Marino Gammazza and Francesco Cappello, have taken part to a study with colleagues of the Universities of Gdansk and Rzeszow, Poland, which has shown anti-tumor activity of 2-Methoxyestradiol, a physiological metabolite of estradiol, an estrogen hormone produced by the ovaries. This hormone showed to be able in arresting the cell cycle of cancer cells and inducing programmed cell death (apoptosis). This study has been published in the prestigious journal “Oncotarget”.The work can be read online here.

IEMEST’s researchers published a study of the alteration of glucose metabolism.
The research has been published in the Journal of Cell Physiology and highlighted the effects of the "glucagon-like peptide 2" (GLP-2) on the metabolism of mice treated with a high fat diet. GLP-2 acts as a protective factor against the alteration of glucose metabolism. The work can be read online here. Francesca Rappa and Francesco Cappello have taken part to this work.
